Description: The Green Globe Artichoke is considered the king of artichokes, and is the variety that you'll mostly find in grocery stores. This heirloom member of the thistle family, not only tastes delicious, but its silver-green foliage is quite ornamental, making stunning plants in the garden. Its hearts are thick and flavorful, and is great used in a multitude of dishes. Artichokes grow really well in zones 8-11, since they need a long growing season, however, when started indoors, it can be grown as an annual in colder regions. Green Globe Artichoke plants grow to about 3-5 ft. tall, and produce 3-4, deep green purple tinged, 2-5 inch buds, the edible part of the plant, each. If left on the plant to actually open, it produces a gorgeous, purple, thistle like flower. In its ideal zones it can stay productive for up to 5 years!
