Cassabanana

$2.99 USD

Seed Count: Approx. 15 seeds

Days to Maturity: 70

Description:  Cassabanana, also known as Sikana, or Musk Cucumber, grows on an ornamental vine, and produces deep red-maroon skinned, melon like fruit, with sweet yellow-orange flesh.  Its rinds, just like watermelon, are inedible, along with its seeds, and the fruit, when ripe, can be eaten raw, or made into preserves.  The flesh is very fragrant.  In fact, it is so fragrant, that it is often used as a natural scent in South American homes.  Its delectable flesh tastes like a cantaloupe with a hint of banana flavor, when allowed to ripen, and if picked young and green, the fruit can be cooked and added to soups and stews, tasting very similar to a cucumber.  These fruits can grow up to 2 feet long, and 5 inches thick, in almost perfect cylindrical shapes.  The fruits can even be stored for several months, as long as they are kept cool and dry.  This vine is fast growing and hardy, and will quickly sprawl to 50+ ft., so it may be best to grow this vine up on a trellis to conserve space.  Cassabanana is a heat loving variety, and grows very well in the hot South, however, it can adapt to several different climates.
