Common Thyme

Description:   Thymus vulgaris, known as common thyme, is an aromatic herb that should have a place in every home garden.  This flavorful plant can be used fresh or dried, to flavor a variety of meats, veggies, fish, stews, soups, sauces, and dressings.  It's also great to implement as a low edging in edible landscape designs. Common thyme grows about 12 inches tall, and is known for spreading, so I like to keep mine in containers.  It forms woody stems, with tiny linear to ovate dark grey-green leaves with fine hairs, and small white or purple-pink flowers that appear at its tips during late spring and early summer.  Thyme is a super easy to grow, no fuss plant that's adaptable to many soils and climates, and actually thrives on neglect.  Plus, it's drought tolerant, can be grown in containers and small spaces, and a great addition to your pollinator garden, since bees, and butterflies love when it flowers.  Thyme is an evergreen in areas with mild winters.  Thyme always reminds me of Thanksgiving, and I can't wait for my mom to cook her turkey on a bed of thyme, rosemary, and sage every year; the smell of this trio is so divine.
